But don’t fret it. With the right photographer, the right location, and the right mindset, rocking out an amazing senior photography session will be no big deal. So let’s just jump in to a few hacks, tips, tricks - or whatever you want to call them - because we all know your senior photos are just one more thing on your (super) long list that you’re going to slay!

You’ve Got This

You’ve got everyone rooting for you and everyone wants to see you succeed on your own terms! And like they say, there’s no time like the present!

See where I’m going with this?

Now is a great time to put in the effort and really make your senior photos your own! Do some research ahead of time to decide what look you like. Next, start to build an idea board of possible locations or clothing options.

Hint: Pinterest makes it super easy to share your style ideas with your photographer.

Look at websites, social profiles, and call photographers to find one that can photograph in a way to compliment your own personal style. Trust me, if you want to feel comfortable in your senior photos, the best place to start is with a photographer that you feel comfortable with.

Be REAL : Don’t Fake It

Several years from now, when you look back at your senior photos, who is it you want to see? YOURSELF! The person you were when you graduated into this next stage of life. The person who lived authentically.. Right?

That’s why we always say, don’t fake it. With the right photographer, even the professional images for mom and dad or the ones for your grandparents can still portray your individuality.

Have a sport, activity, or style that you really like? Don’t hide it away for your senior photos. Let it shine!! Although, it's always a good idea to let your photographer know about these ideas before your photo-shoot so they can be prepared to help you rock them out properly!

Have a Solid Plan

Finally, the best piece of advice we can give you about feeling comfortable for your senior photos is to go in with a solid plan.

It is always a good idea to take time to consider how these images will be used or where they will be displayed before having them started. Trust us, waiting to think about this very important detail until the moment your standing in front of the camera is a sure way to look stressed and confused.

So let us help. . .

If you will be purchasing image prints for personal display, be sure to consider the area of the house that your photos will be displayed in. Think about color choices that would complement this area and then take them into consideration when choosing your wardrobe.

Who else will need your senior photos? Some schools require a specific image style (i.e. headshot only) while others allow you to be more informal. Be sure to know what your school needs ahead of time so there’s no need to worry about it on the day of your photoshoot.

Lastly, determine who the final decision makers are on purchasing your photos? Talk with them ahead of time to make sure their needs are accounted for. Also be sure to invite them to any photographer meetings and always keep them in the loop!

One of the hardest parts of ordering portraits is sizing. What size is the best for your space, what size do family members want, and how will they be displayed?

HSP is here to help, during our ordering sessions here at our studio in Fenton Michigan we have a new system that allows you to see your portraits on your homes walls instantly. This takes the guessing work out of hanging portraits and gives an accurate view of the space. All too often we hear.."8x10 that's too big!" Or we don't need a really big one.

Below is an example of an 8x10 hung on a wall, we think you will agree Grandma is going to have a hard time enjoying this portrait!

This weekend we packed up the truck and took off to see this blue ice that we had been hearing so much about on Facebook. As a photographer I always want to find a different way to photograph what everyone else is pointing a camera at. In this case it didn't matter where I pointed my camera there was beauty all around us.

The kids enjoyed climbing on the ice and seeing how far they could see, while we also took the opportunity to snap a quick family portrait. While we lacked on the pre planning of outfits and colors we made up for in location!

If you have the opportunity to see this rare occurrence it is highly recommended to stay close to the shoreline, the best viewing we found was right downtown Mackinaw City.  Enjoy a few of our photos from this random adventure!
